Formerly Eurail

Eurail Global Pass → now the Interrail Global Pass

If you live outside Europe (the US, Canada, Australia, Asia, Africa or South America), this used to be your "Eurail" pass. Since 10 September 2026, Eurail has retired that name worldwide: it's the same 33-country network, the same product, now sold under the Interrail brand for everyone.

Eligibility

What changed, and what didn't

Eurail and Interrail were always run by the same company and covered exactly the same trains — the only real difference was the name on the pass, based on where you legally reside. As of 10 September 2026, Eurail no longer exists as a separate product: you now buy an "Interrail" pass whether you live in Europe or not. Existing Eurail passes bought before that date remain valid on their original terms.

The one substantive difference left has nothing to do with brand: if you legally reside in one of the 33 network countries, your Global Pass also includes a free outbound and inbound journey within your home country. As a visitor from outside the network, you don't get that leg — but the price list, coverage and rules are otherwise identical to the Interrail Global Pass page on this site.

Buying as a visitor: you don't need to buy before you fly in every case, but ordering ahead online is simplest, and you'll need to activate the pass (paper pass at a station ticket office, or via the Rail Planner app for mobile passes) before your first journey.

Restrictions to plan around

What the pass doesn't cover

Seat reservations

Compulsory and paid separately on most high-speed and night trains: French TGV inOui/Ouigo (€5–20 depending on the train and how early you book), Italian Frecce, Thalys, most Eurostar and sleeper services. Book these as soon as your dates are fixed.

Activate before boarding

Mobile passes are managed through the Rail Planner app; you must select and lock in each travel day before you board, or risk a fine.

No city transit

Metros, trams and most urban commuter networks are excluded — the pass is for intercity rail.

Night trains span 2 days

Departures after roughly 7pm generally use the following day's allowance too — check the specific route.
